The large Japanese cryptocurrency DMM Bitcoin has reported today a security breach that resulted in the loss 4,502.9 BTC. This is currently worth over $300,000,000. This incident took place at around 1:26 pm and involved unauthorised access to the wallet of the exchange.
DMM Bitcoin stated in an official press release that it has taken measures to limit unauthorized access to certain services. This is to improve security. This includes suspending the opening of new accounts, processing cryptocurrency withdraws, and accepting any new orders to trade on spot. Existing limit orders, and withdrawals in Japanese Yen will be delayed.
DMM Bitcoin has stated that they are committed to guaranteeing 100% of all Bitcoin deposits made by customers. “Please rest assured that all of your Bitcoin (BTC) deposits will be fully guaranteed as we will procure the equivalent amount of BTC that was leaked with support from our group companies,” The announcement stated.
They say that the exchange is a misunderstanding “deeply apologize for any inconvenience caused to our customers,” DMM Bitcoin is investigating this incident. DMM Bitcoin will update its customers as soon as new information is available.
