The Vatican Library (the library of the Holy See located in Vatican City) has partnered up with Japanese technology firm NTT Data for the launch of a Web3 project This is a system that rewards users with non-fungible (NFT) tokens.
The collaboration is a continuation of a partnership that has existed between both entities for many years. NTT Data started working on this project since 2014. “AMLAD,” The Vatican Library has a vast collection of books, manuscripts, coins and medals. AMLAD will digitize 2 million cultural items, such as books, manuscripts coins and medals.
Web3 is a project that expands this digitalization effort through the introduction of NFTs. NFTs can be earned by registering for the Web3 project or making donations.
Two levels of NFTs are available: Silver and gold. Silver NFTs are awarded to those who register for the Project. These NFTs unlock high-resolution photos of 15 ancient texts.
The Gold National Football Teams (NFTs) are awarded for financial Donors can access high-resolution pictures of 21 manuscripts, along with exclusive content in the digital archive.
NFTs cannot be transferred and are issued on the Polygon chain.
It is yet another application of Web3 technologies for the preservation and engagement of cultural heritage. The project follows other similar initiatives, including the Future Now Project In Tuvalu, which uses the metaverse in order to protect the Pacific nation’s cultural heritage from climate change.
